The effects of carbon fiber sheet on cracks in buildings

Aug. 05, 2017

When the useful life of buildings is very long, it will usually appear all sorts of hidden danger. The most common is the cracks of building structure. The small crack is not dangerous. But when some cracks are over certain width and limit, they will affect the durability and applicability of buildings. Once the cracks appear, they will constantly expand and corrode the internal structure by being easily affected by various factors. So now building reinforcement companies attach great importance to building cracks. The most commonly used method of repairing the cracks is the epoxy structural adhesive and carbon fiber sheet.

The harm of cracks on buildings are generally as follows:
1. Influence of low temperature. This point is relatively more obvious in the north of China. Low temperature will lead to thermal expansion and appear cracks. Then water vapour goes into the cracks and freeze into ice in the low temperature. Its volume will expand. The cracks gradually increase and even corrode the internal steel rebar.

2. The steel rebar corrodes the cracks. This is because the steel rebar appears air and moisture corrosion. Then the rust will change the steel rebar volume into three to four times than the original, which will let the construction cement appear cracks. The cracks accelerate steel rebar corrosion and this will form a vicious cycle.
So when this situation appears, we need to use epoxy adhesive and carbon fiber sheet to repair the building. The application method is to use unidirectional carbon fiber sheet and matched carbon fiber adhesive. They are pasted one by one which are vertical to the cracks. The correct procedure is very important! The length of each had better be 60. The carbon fiber sheet and the original reinforced concrete stand the stress together in order to increase the tensile and seismic capacity of buildings. This construction method is quite quick and convenient. Besides, carbon fiber sheet is lightweight and will not increase the weight of the original building. It is currently internationally mainstream cracks treatment.

The advantages of using Mankate carbon fiber sheet reinforcement:
1. Tensile strength is 8 to 10 times stronger than steel;
2. Weight and density are only 1/4 of the steel;
3. Corrosion resistance and high temperature resistance;
4. Wide range of application. Because the characteristics of carbon fiber sheet, it can be perfectly fitted to the surface of various shapes and buildings. It is perfect reinforcing material.
